I think StarLink sold too many dishes into my location (Abuquerque New Mexico) or it is just that the people who are sharing the provision with me are unusually heavy users, as the numbers I see when I check my up/down speeds are well below those reported by most users on the Reddit forum, not to mention extremely far below those seen by new users who are nearly alone in newly served locations.īut the rather modest up/down speeds have seldom had practical adverse effect for the real usage I am my wife make. Keith Myers wrote: So may I ask what you think of your Starlink connection? How long were you on the waitlist?įinancially, using Starlink is nuts for me. I normally can only support my load for about 7 minutes and the software shuts the PC down after about 3 minutes normally. ![]() So I get an hours worth of internet connectivity if the power goes out for that long. It does take a minute or so for the notification to get recognized though. I have built the client myself to implement the code fix and it works as it should by suspending BOINC processing when the UPS kicks on that dramatically drops the load on the UPS which is also powering my internet gateway and router. Has never been merged to the client code. But the issue Add support of UPower to detect battery status on linux #3425 I put in a Github request to make this work for PC's on a UPS and the main developer coded it up for me. As a result, I broke my kneecap on November 4, and am still recovering. Presumably something during the power outage sneaked through the UPS to hit something on the PC it could not stand. In fact, my most recent PC failure was a system which failed to come back to life after a power outage. I like to think that this grade of UPS unit gives better protection against power trouble than does a typical power strip with included surge protection, but it is nowhere near perfect protection. If it worked, the self-same UPS unit would give over triple the runtime, and just maybe I could get by with smaller price UPS units with less than 1500 ratings. That works for my laptop (which no longer runs BOINC), but I've not been able to get it to work on my Windows PCs, ever. Nominally BOINC lets you say "don't run BOINC tasks when the system is on battery". I figure on getting three or maybe four years before replacement. I suspect the manufacturers (both APC and CyberPower) may not do a very good job of providing the right maintenance conditions, as I think a decent lead-acid battery in standby service (for example for exit lighting in many buildings) should last much longer than that. So I shut that PC down extra-quick when the power fails in order to keep my home Wifi running with Internet for a couple of hours. That one serves my StarLink Internet provision, plus my router. Only one of my three UPS units serves any load other than a single PC. So figure on getting a VA rating several times your actual load if you want your PC to keep running through even a short service outage (at least until you can run to shut it down as the beep sounds). But if you run at the limiting VA you'd be lucky to get three minutes sustain time when the batteries are new. One example is this one: CP1500PFCLCD PFC. One is branded AmazonBasics, but I think was built by CyberPower, as were the others. Each has a UPS, of only slightly varying model. I run three PCs, all of which serve Einstein. What are you running? If more than one computer, how many? I may get a UPS Battery Backup and Surge Protector because I do not know if the voltage supplied through the outlets is good and stable, and the UPS will help protect against brownouts. But, the Senior Retirement Community that I live in has a new (6 months) power generator for the entire building that is powered by natural gas and automatically switches over if the power drops out. Personally, I am using a Belkin Surge Protector rated at 4000 Joules. Or, if you're not using a UPS or Surge Protector, have you thought about it? Is anyone using only a Surge Protector? How many Joules is it good for? What brand? I wonder whether anyone is using a Universal Power Supply (UPS) Battery Backup and Surge Protector, and if so, what Brand and how many Watts does it protect for? (i.e., APC UPS 1500VA / 900W battery backup power supply, or a CyberPower UPS 850VA / 510W battery backup system, Tripp Lite UPS 800VA / 475W battery backup surge protector, etc.) ![]() ![]() ![]() The query includes maliciously crafted text, which Log4j processes as instructions. Hackers are scanning through the internet to find vulnerable servers and setting up machines that can deliver malicious payloads. So while big companies like Amazon can quickly patch their web services to prevent hackers from exploiting them, there are many more organizations that will take longer to patch their systems, and some that might not even know they need to. This means hackers have a large menu of targets to choose from: home users, service providers, source code developers and even security researchers. Open-source software like Log4j is used in so many products and tools that some organizations don’t even know which pieces of code are on their computers. In addition to popular games like Minecraft, it’s used in cloud services like Apple iCloud and Amazon Web Services, as well as a wide range of programs from software development tools to security tools. I was able to reproduce the problem in my copy of Ghidra, a reverse-engineering framework for security researchers, in just a couple of minutes. ![]() It is relatively simple to exploit Log4Shell. This opens the door for nefarious activities such as stealing sensitive information, taking control of the targeted system and slipping malicious content to other users communicating with the affected server. Log4j allows third-party servers to submit software code that can perform all kinds of actions on the targeted computer. Unfortunately, this kind of code can be used for more than just formatting log messages. To do so, the Log4j server has to communicate with the server holding the real names. This feature allows Log4j to, for example, log not only the username associated with each attempt to log in to the server but also the person’s real name, if a separate server holds a directory linking user names and real names. Log4Shell works by abusing a feature in Log4j that allows users to specify custom code for formatting a log message. For example, in the online game Minecraft, Log4j is used by the server to log activity like total memory used and user commands typed into the console. ![]() Similar diagnostic messages are used throughout software applications. The mention of a commission also indicated to observers the seriousness of the incident, and subsequent state radio broadcasts were replaced with classical music, which was a common method of preparing the public for an announcement of a tragedy in the USSR. When they finally acknowledged it, although without any details, the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS) then discussed the Three Mile Island accident and other American nuclear accidents, which Serge Schmemann of The New York Times wrote was an example of the common Soviet tactic of whataboutism. The Soviet government engaged in a major cover-up of the disaster in 1986. In the following 10 years, 14 more workers (9 who had been hospitalized with ARS) died of various causes mostly unrelated to radiation exposure. Among those hospitalized, 28 died within the following three months, all of whom were hospitalized for ARS. During the immediate emergency response, 237 workers were hospitalized, of which 134 exhibited symptoms of acute radiation syndrome (ARS). įollowing the reactor explosion, which killed two engineers and severely burned two more, a secret emergency operation to put out the fire, stabilize the reactor, and clean up the ejected radioactive material began. The exclusion zone was later increased to a radius of 30 kilometres (19 mi), from which an additional ~68,000 people were evacuated. In response to the initial accident, a 10-kilometre (6.2 mi) radius exclusion zone was created 36 hours after the accident, from which approximately 49,000 people were evacuated, primarily from Pripyat. The fire released about the same amount of radioactive material as the initial explosion. Approximately 70% landed in Byelorussia (now Belarus), 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) away. This was immediately followed by an open-air reactor core fire which lasted until, during which airborne radioactive contaminants were released and deposited onto other parts of the USSR and Europe. The meltdown and explosions ruptured the reactor core and destroyed the reactor building. This process led to steam explosions and the melting of the reactor core. Neutron absorption thus dropped, leading to an increase in reactor activity, which further increased coolant temperatures (a positive feedback loop). That brought about the rupture of fuel channels and a rapid drop in pressure, thereby prompting the coolant to flash to steam. Due to a design flaw, this action resulted in localized increases in reactivity within the reactor (i.e., " positive scram"). Upon test completion, the operators triggered a reactor shutdown. While recovering from the power drop and stabilizing the reactor, the operators removed a number of control rods which exceeded limits set by the operating procedures. During a planned decrease of reactor power in preparation for the test, the operators accidentally dropped power output to near-zero, due partially to xenon poisoning. The accident occurred during a safety test meant to measure the ability of the steam turbine to power the emergency feedwater pumps of an RBMK-type nuclear reactor in the event of a simultaneous loss of external power and major coolant leak. The initial emergency response, together with later decontamination of the environment, involved more than 500,000 personnel and cost an estimated 18 billion roubles-roughly US $68 billion in 2019, adjusted for inflation. I fell apart today in the Doctor’s office – guess just from hearing what I already knew about mama’s health and future, but didn’t want to face – along with just being completely exhausted emotionally and physically. ![]() The emotional support Flamingo Homecare brought to our home made such a difference! Thank you Jamie and Sheila for the experience and wisdom to help our family through our most difficult time. She was so reassuring and helped us choose a caregiver Mom would be comfortable with… Jamie was a great help and comfort! Although Mom wasn’t with us but a few weeks after she came, Jamie provided a smile and the encouragement we all needed so much. My brother found Flamingo Homecare online and we met with Sheila, the owner, at my home. But, I realized it was now possible for me to care for her at home, with some assistance. Mom had always said ‘a facility’ would be appropriate when she reached that point. Our 96 year-old mom began to decline rapidly, with several hospital stays and orders that she no longer live alone. The rate for us was reasonable but more importantly the care shown by the agency and the staff was truly genuine. She took over and made me feel comfortable. I must say that it was very hard for me to let others do my work and I tended to want to jump in and help, but Avril, my homecare person and new friend, would hear none of it. She arranged for a phone call greeting and once done we were set. Since we are part timers Sheila had just the person for me. Sheila made registering so smooth and provided faces of the staff from which to choose. I am blessed to have found Flamingo Homecare. Because I spend a great deal of time taking care of him I was not able to do things for myself or even around the house. I also caretaker for my 91 year old husband who has COPD.
